5. Aparajito (1956)
The second film of the Apu Trilogy after Pather Panchali. The critical success of the earlier film prompted Ray to make the sequel. The film, in what Ray would go on to follow in many of his later adaptations, was much departed from the actual text written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. Aparajito went on to win a number of major international awards, including the Golden Lion and Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival, becoming the first film to win both.
