5 Bengali TV Serials that May Soon Go Off-Air

Two of the leading Bengali general entertainment channels (GECs), Star Jalsha and Zee Bangla, have recently started airing several new serials. While Adorini, Pratidaan, and Sanyashi Raja are being shown on the former, Zee has begun broadcasting Rani Rashmoni, Bakshobodol, and Joyee.

But speculation is rife in the industry that both channels have commissioned a number of new Bengali TV serials. Work has begun on most of them, though their promos have not yet been readied.  The pre-production phase of any new serial usually lasts for about a month a half.

Zee has already started airing the promos of Seemarekha which has national award winning actress Indrani Haldar in the lead. That aside, three more projects are slated to be introduced soon on Star Jalsha and Zee Bangla, which means the same number of serials, is likely to go off-air.

Here are the five worst performing Bengali TV serials over the past two months that have gathered the lowest television rating points (TRPs) and could be axed to make way for fresh content.

1. Jai Kali Kalkattawali

The comeback vehicle of another national award winning actress Ananya Chatterjee, on Star Jalsha, had created a lot of buzz among the audience. But that didn’t take time to fizz out. The serial was not even an average performer on the TRP charts, and may be taken off in the next two months, if it fails to restore at least some viewership.

2. Mayar Badhon

The TRP target for a 5.30pm broadcast slot is never high. By that yardstick, Mayar Badhon was able to secure a decent rank, largely because of the performances of the lead pair Jasmine Roy and Debottam Majumder. But the writers of this once-popular Star Jalsha serial have messed up with the storyline. Chances of recovery are poor and the serial may be withdrawn soon.
