Soumitra Chatterjee films

Counted among the best romantic comedies ever made in Bengal, this Dinen Gupta film had a stellar cast that returned some amazing performances. A group of young boys and girls of a neighbourhood are at loggerheads with each other with Soumitra as Shyamsundar and Aparna Sen playing Anuradha. While others call a truce, Shyam and Anuradha remain bitter rivals until the very end when he forges circumstances to win her over. Basanta Bilap is memorable for the brilliant situational comedy, and Chinmoy Roy’s epochal line, ‘Ekbar balo, Uttam Kumar.’ The Soumitra-Aparna pair has given the Bengali audience some of the best romcoms that also include Baksa Badal (1970) and Chhutir Phande (1975).
