Sujoy Ghosh Back With a Bang

RBN Web Desk: Bollywood director Sujoy Ghosh, who successfully explored the short film genre with Ahalya in 2015, is back with a bang with Anukul.

The film released today on YouTube.

This is Sujoy’s second short film and is based on a story of the same name by Satyajit Ray, considered to be one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema.

There’s often a slip between the cup and the lip, and none probably knows it better than Sujoy Ghosh. The filmmaker who directed the now cult Kahaani (2012), broke the internet with Ahalya that had Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Radhika Apte, and Tota Roy Chowdhury in pivotal roles. The 14-minute film that garnered more than seven million views since it resealed on YouTube, prompted Sujoy to announce his next project.

But days before Anukul was to go on the floors, Ronodeep Bose, who was supposed to play the title role in the film, met with a tragic bike accident, and slipped into a coma. Ronodeep is the grandson of Soumitra Chattopadhyay and the young actor is yet to fully recover from the incident.

Sujoy Ghosh then pulled a coup of sorts by casting two Byomkesh Bakshis—Abir Chattopadhyay and Jisshu Sengupta—in Anukul. But the project was put on the back-burner and Sujoy left for London for a long vacation.

Anukul has seasoned actors like Saurabh Shukla, Kharaj Mukherjee and Parambrata Chatterjee in the cast. Both Kharaj and Parambrata played police officers in Kahaani.

Anukul, like Kahaani, is set in Kolkata.
