Rival TV Channels Take Awards Route to Bolster TRPs
RBN Web Desk: Two major Bengali general entertainment channels (GECs) took the awards route, over the last two weekends, in a battle to win over audiences. Both these shows were recorded months ago but were broadcast only recently.
That aside, these two rival TV channels, in a bid to outsmart each other regarding fresh content are launching new serials regularly. While one of the GECs launched Phagun Bou and Jibon Jyoti some days back, the other is all set to introduce to brand new shows, Joy Baba Lokenath and Krishnakoli.
One of the awards programmes broadcast last week, was hosted by prominent film personalities Subhasree Ganguly, Kanchan Mullick, and Srabanti Chatterjee. If this channel roped in film stars, its closest rival had the lead actor of one of its serials as the host.
These two rival TV channels are already at loggerheads to grab the pole position in the television rating point (TRP) charts, for the week 24 to 30 March, to be released by the Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC) any day now. While one of these channels air serials like Ke Apon Ke Por and Kusum Dola, the other broadcasts shows that include Rani Rashmoni and Saat Bhai Champa. All these programmes are consistent performers on the TRP charts.

Awards shows are widely considered by the television industry to be the clincher in bagging the top TRP spot. They follow a common format of having guest performances by Bollywood celebrities and inviting prominent personalities from the Bengali film industry. But this year it was far too common with both the rival TV channels channels having Koel Mallick and Prosenjit Chatterjee as their guests.
