London: Former Lake Gardens (Kolkata) resident, Nabarupa Mukherjee, has entered the final of the Mrs India UK contest 2018. This is the second edition of the beauty pageant and has already earned huge popularity among expatriate Indians settled in the western European country.
Nabarupa, speaking to RBN, didn’t hide her excitement on being selected as a finalist. “It’s a keenly fought contest and widely participated by Indians in the UK,” she said.
Nabarupa had spent her growing-up years in the south Kolkata neighbourhood, and shifted to Durgapur in 1986, when her father was transferred on job. She returned to Kolkata sometime in 1994 and was staying in Behala.
“Beauty pageants always interested me and Sushmita Sen winning the Miss Universe crown in 1994 was a huge inspiration,” said the former Haldia Petrochemicals staffer.
But all that took a backseat when she left Kolkata for higher studies in UK and later a job in a premier automobile company. Nabarupa was apprehensive whether she could make the cut to the Mrs India UK pageant, now that she was busy with her career and domesticity.
“My mother encouraged me to register as a participant and advised not to let go the opportunity,” Nabarupa said, adding that her husband too lent an all-out support in this regard.
The mother of a seven-year old, Nabarupa is a trained vocalist in Hindustani classical and Rabindra Sangeet, and has started doing stage and television shows recently. “I have taken up music more seriously now after being involved in balancing my career and family for the better part of my life in UK,” said the technocrat who is keen to pursue western pop and jazz.
But as of now Nabarupa has trained her guns on Mrs India UK which she is hopeful of winning. “It will open the doors for several other international beauty contests,” she said.
The final of the event will be held on 15 April.
