Many historians believe that Subhas did not die in the plane crash in Formosa (now Taiwan) on 18 August 1945 as has since been officially reported. Some researchers claim that he returned to India and lived as an ascetic named Gumnami Baba aka Bhagwanji in Faizabad from the 1950s to 1985. He lived in various parts of Uttar Pradesh as a recluse and rarely met people. After his death on 16 September 1985, his room was found to have hundreds of objects, including notes, letters, and other correspondence that were connected to Subhas.
Sanyasi Deshonayak was slated to be canned in 2016 but was delayed because of several reasons. The film has been shot in Faizabad, Naimisharanya, Ladakh, and Kolkata.
The film also has Saswata Chatterjee, Narendra Panjwani, Ajay Singh, and Uday Veer Singh in major roles.
Interestingly, director Srijit Mukherjee has also announced a film on the same subject, where Prosenjit Chatterjee is expected to play Gumnami Baba.
