Ray Dropped Hindi Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne Midway, Recalls Gulzar

RBN Web Desk: Poet and filmmaker Gulzar has said that auteur Satyajit Ray had dropped the idea to make a Hindi version of the cult classic Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne midway probably after a rift with the producers. The 1969 fantasy-adventure film was the biggest hit in Ray’s career as a filmmaker.

Gulzar has translated the original text of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, penned by Satyajit’s grandfather Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, for the upcoming animation film Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya. The film is directed by Shilpa Ranade.

Speaking to the media recently, Gulzar said that he always wanted to work with Ray, and the two were supposed to remake Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne in Hindi. Gulzar started writing the script but Ray abandoned the project after a point of time. The Aandhi director was upset with the decision since he badly wanted to work with him.

Gulzar said that his involvement in the animation film has fulfilled his wish at least in some way.
