Prosenjit May Not Play Sata Bose
RBN Web Desk: Producer-actor Prosenjit Chatterjee is unlikely to play the role of Satyasundar aka Sata Bose in director Srijit Mukherji’s adaptation of Mani Shankar Mukherjee’s iconic novel Chowringhee. Srijit, in January, had announced the film in the presence of both Prosenjit and the author.
Chowringhee was earlier made into a film in 1968 with a huge ensemble cast that included Uttam Kumar, Supriya Devi, Biswajit Chattopadhyay, Anjana Bhowmick, Utpal Dutt, Subhendu Chatterjee, Bhanu Banerjee, Jahar Roy, Sukhen Das, and others. The film was a major box office hit and over the years has attained a cult status among the Bengali audience. Uttam Kumar played the role of Sata Bose which is widely considered among his best. The film was directed by Pinaki Mukherjee.
Prosenjit, at the launching of the film, had said, “Sata Bose is a character that any actor would love to play. Besides, the film is a reprisal of sorts for me, as my father Biswajit Chattopadhyay played Anindya Pakrashi’s role in the 1968 film.”
If industry sources are to be believed, Prosenjit has now expressed his reluctance to step into the shoes of Uttam Kumar and play the role which has been immortalised by the Bengal matinee idol. However, the actor has clarified that this won’t sour his relationship with Srijit, sources added.

Srijit’s adaptation of the novel, for some time now, has been facing casting problems. Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan was roped in to play the housekeeper and high society escort Karabi Guha. She was then cast as airhostess Sujata Mitra, the role which Bhowmick played in the 1968 film. But Jaya, in a later development, chose to walk out of the project entirely.

Abir Chatterjee will play the main protagonist Sankar in the new film. The role was played by Subhendu in the earlier film. Mamata Shankar has been roped in to play the role of socialite Mrs Pakrashi. Her son Anindya’s role will be played by Jisshu Sengupta, while Anjan Dutt has been cast in the role of Marco Polo, the owner of the hotel. Utpal Dutt had played Marco Polo in the 1968 film.
Anupam Roy is the songwriter and music composer of the film.
Chowringhee is slated to go on the floors later this year.
