Bengali TV Serial Actor, Wife Arrested for Cheating

RBN Web Desk: The criminal investigation department (CID) of Bangalore City Police has arrested a Bengali TV serial actor and his wife for allegedly cheating a Bengaluru-based engineer of nearly ₹60 lakh. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the husband-wife duo operated from Kolkata.

According to the police, Kushan Majumdar and his wife Rupali Majumdar allegedly cheated vulnerable persons, promising them a luxurious life. Two mobile phones, ₹44,000 in cash, and some bank passbooks have been seized from the couple, police added.

Kushan, who holds a diploma in automobile engineering, worked as a salesperson with some banks before beginning his career as a scriptwriter for several popular Bengali TV serials. He has also acted in serials like Kurukshetra, Saat Paake Bandha, Mouchak, and others. However, his work shrank in recent years, and Kushan allegedly conspired with Rupali to cheat her online acquaintances. She managed to extract money from her social media friends, and deposited it into Kushan’s savings bank account, police said.

According to the CID, Rupali used to download pictures of attractive models from the internet, and posted them as her profile picture on dating websites. She used to introduce herself as either a doctor, or a teacher working in Kolkata, CID added.

The duped engineer alleged to the CID that he has been cheated for about ₹58 lakh by a woman who called herself Arpita. He claimed to have met Arpita on an online dating website and the woman used the name ‘Shompa76’. Arpita told him that she was a school teacher from Kolkata. The two soon exchanged their mobile phone numbers and chatted regularly. Some days later, the woman requested the engineer to lend her ₹30,000, for her ailing father’s admission to a private hospital in south Kolkata. The engineer said that he deposited the money to the account disclosed by the woman.

The Bangalore City Police checked the bank account transactions, examined CCTV footage, and landed at the house of the accused along with a Kolkata Police team. Rupali and Kushan have since been remanded to judicial custody by a Bengaluru court.
