Veteran Actress Supriya Devi Dead
Kolkata: Veteran actress Supriya Devi passed away last night after suffering a cardiac arrest at her Ballygunje home. She was 83.
In a career spanning more than six decades, Supriya Devi worked with all the leading directors of Bengali cinema, including Ritwik Ghatak, Tarun Majumdar, Pinaki Mukherjee, and others.
Supriya played the title role in the hit 1990s TV serial Janani. She also acted in director Atanu Ghosh’s telefilm Mishraraag.

She played a major role in the 1964 film Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein. The film was directed by Kishore Kumar.
Supriya Devi made her debut in the 1952 film Basu Paribar opposite Uttam Kumar. The Bengali matinee idol was her long time partner and companion.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee termed Supriya’s death as the end of the Uttam era in Bengali films. Filmmaker Goutam Ghose said that her death was a big loss for the Bengali film industry.
Supriya was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014.
