Tarun Bhattacharya, Prodyut Mukherjee to Introduce New Raga
Kolkata: Veteran Indian classical musician Tarun Bhattacharya is all set to introduce the city to a new raga. The santoor maestro has created the new raga—Ganga—to pay tribute to the river and will perform live in a concert in Kolkata on 18 June. Senior percussionist Prodyut Mukherjee will do the rhythm and sound design for the concert.
The event is being organised by the ministry of culture and Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
According to Bhattacharya, “Ganga has been created with a blend of raga Kalabati and raga Yogeswari.” He has come up with the new raga in support of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the government’s countrywide cleanliness campaign that was launched in 2014.
“It’s our salutation to Ganga and an appeal to the people of our country to keep the river clean and spread awareness in this regard,” said Mukherjee.
The duo held the first concert on 10 June in Varanasi.
