Mainstream Hindi Cinema Needs a Ray: Majid Majidi
RBN Web Desk: Eminent Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi has said that mainstream Hindi cinema needs a director like Satyajit Ray to take the medium forward. Besides Majidi, Ray’s films have had a major influence on several leading filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin Tarantino, Elia Kazan. George Lucas, Danny Boyle, and Christopher Nolan.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) yesterday, Majidi said, there’s a big difference between Ray and the Hindi film industry. Most of Ray’s films were shot on real locations and highlighted social issues in all the importance they deserved. Realism was ingrained in Ray’s films. Majidi said that he was always touched by the humane content in his films.
Had Immediately Said Yes to Ray: Waheeda Rehman
Majidi however said that Hindi cinema is not entirely disappointing. There are many extremely talented individuals working in the industry. But what Mumbai perhaps needs is another Ray who can strike a balance with market demands and the sensibilities of alternative cinema. Unlike Hindi cinema, Iranian films are much closer to reality, he added.
