Four Decades Later, Barrister PK Basu Returns on the Big Screen

RBN Web Desk: More than four decades since the character last appeared on film, director Haranath Chakraborty is all set to bring back author Narayan Sanyal’s popular lawyer-detective barrister PK Basu to the big screen. Veteran actor Ranjit Mallick has been roped in to play the title role.

Jodi Jantem, the last and the only film to feature barrister PK Basu, was released in 1974. Bengal matinee idol Uttam Kumar played the title role. The film had a big star cast with Soumitra Chatterjee, Kamal Mitra, Supriya Devi, Basanta Choudhury, Ruma Guha Thakurta, and Tarun Kumar in major roles. It was directed by Tarun Majumdar under the collective banner Yatrik. Jodi Jantem, a whodunit based on Sanyal’s story Nagchampa, was fairly well received at the box office.

  • I was really looking forward to someone starting this franchise. Though most of the story plots were inspired by English thrillers, it had a very Bengali appeal
