Hazarika was a tenant in the house situated on Golf Club Road in Tollygunge when he moved to the city and later bought the property in the 1980s. He achieved international fame through his compositions while staying in this house. His songs were translated into several Indian languages. The house later became dilapidated and Hazarika’s family could not afford the maintenance costs.
The Assam government plans to convert the house to a museum.
