9 Bengali Films to Look Forward to in 2018

2017 was a mixed year for Bengali films. While Posto and Boss 2 were major hits, several other films performed well at the box office. The industry had its share of duds though, with the audience largely rejecting remakes of films from the south. Over the last couple of years, there has been a gradual shift from remakes to original content and the trend is expected to continue in the coming days.

A number of films are lined up for release this year. Let’s have a look at the ones that are riding high on expectations.

1. Aschhe Abar Shabor

The first Tollywood film to be released this year, Aschhe Abar Shabor is the third film of the Shabor franchise and will have Saswata Chatterjee reprising the role of Shabor Dasgupta, a crack cop. A girl is found raped and murdered at Chandannagar. The incident has a striking resemblance to a similar killing in Kolkata. Shabor is called to investigate the case. Both the earlier films Ebar Shabor (2015) and Eagoler Chokh (2016), based on Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay novels, were loved by the audience. Indraneil Sengupta, Anjana Basu Gaurav  Chakraborty play major roles in the film directed by Arindam Sil that will release on 19 January.

2. Inspector NottyK

Actor Jeet is the master of remakes. However, his brand of Bengali films has a fan base of its own, largely on the outskirts of Kolkata. Inspector NottyK is the Bengali remake of Punjabi film Jatt & Juliet 2. The Bengali version is directed by Ashok Pati who has several hit Oriya films to his credit. Inspector NottyK is a romantic comedy that revolves around two police inspectors. Nusrat Faria plays the female lead in the film. It will release on 19 January mostly on single-screen theatres.

The film, based on a series of blasts in Mumbai, is set for a Bengali New Year release. Dev plays the male lead in Kabir, which is reportedly based on the arrest of Indian Mujahideen founder Yasin Bhatkal. The film is directed by Aniket Chattopadhyay, whose earlier release Meghnad Badh Rahasya didn’t really set the cash registers ringing. Kabir has Dev’s fiancé Rukmini Maitra playing the female lead. With Amazon Obhijaan raking in good numbers, Dev will look for an encore in Kabir.
