Veteran Playwright Girish Karnad Dead
RBN Web Desk: Veteran playwright and actor Girish Karnad breathed his last yesterday after a prolonged illness. He was 81. Karnad reportedly died from multi-organ failure at a Bengaluru hospital last night.
The Jnanpith, Padma Shri, and Padma Bhushan awardee was one of the most popular theatre actors in India. He regularly wrote and performed in Kannada, Hindi, and English plays. That aside, he was a prominent film actor, having worked with some of the leading directors of Hindi cinema, including Shyam Benegal, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, Nagesh Kukunoor, and others.

A multiple National Film Award winner, Karnad was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1972, Padma Shri in 1974, Padma Bhushan in 1992, and the Jnanpith in 1998.
