Danny Denzongpa in a Chhabi Biswas Reprisal
RBN Web Desk: Veteran actor Danny Denzongpa is all set to play Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic Kabuliwala, Rehman Khan, in a new adaptation of the short story. The film, Bioscopewala, is an extrapolation of the 1892 Tagore story. The narrative in the film starts from where the original story ends.
It may be recalled that Chhabi Biswas played the title role in director Tapan Sinha’s 1957 film Kabuliwala. The film has since attained cult status among the audience and is widely acknowledged as one of the best performances of the legendary Bengali actor. It won a Silver Bear at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival.
First Jasari Language Film to Travel to Cannes
Besides Danny, Bioscopwala has Adil Hussain, Tisca Chopra, Miraya Suri and Geetanjani Thapa in some of the important roles. The film is directed by Deb Medhekar.
Mini Basu (Geetanjali), the young girl in Tagore’s story, is grownup in Bioscopewala. She loses her father Robi Basu (Adil) in a plane crash. Mini, while try to reconnect with her childhood, stumbles upon her father’s old friend (Danny), who once operated a travelling bioscope for children on the streets of Kolkata, which she loved. The man now spends his days longing to meet his daughter in war-torn Kabul. Mini takes it upon herself to reunite the man with his daughter.
The trailer of the film was launched yesterday.
Bioscopewala opens on 25 May.
