Veteran Filmmaker Ram Mukherjee Dead

RBN Web Desk: Veteran film director and producer Ram Mukherjee, father of actress Rani Mukherjee, breathed his last early today morning. He was 84 and not keeping well for a long time.

Ram was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on 13 October. He didn’t respond to the treatment over the past few days and his blood pressure dropped since late last night.

Ram Mukherjee co-founded Filmalaya Studios and directed films like Hum Hindustani (1960) and Leader (1964). The latter had Vyjayanthimala and Dilip Kumar in the lead. He also produced and directed Biyer Phool, the debut film of Rani Mukherjee in 1996. The film had Indrani Haldar and Prosenjit Chatterjee in other major roles.

Ram Mukherjee was cremated this evening at Pawan Hans Crematorium. Rani Mukherjee and her husband—filmmaker Aditya Chopra—were present to offer the last rites.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Bollywood celebrities mourned his death.

Besides Biyer Phool, Ram Mukherjee directed several other Bengali films like Rakte Lekha (1992), Tomar Rakte Amar Sohag (1993), and Raktanadir Dhara (1994).

Besides Rani, the veteran director is survived by his wife Krishna and son Raj Mukherjee.
