A Reunion, 35 Years in the Making

RBN Web Desk: Thirty-five years since they were last seen as the lead pair in director Pinaki Chowdhury’s romantic thriller Chena Achena, Soumitra Chatterjee and Tanuja are all set to share screen space again in Shonar Pahar. The film is directed by actor-director Parambrata Chatterjee.

Besides Chena Achena, Soumitra and Tanuja played the lead in Ashutosh Bandyopadhyay’s Teen Bhubaner Pare and Inder Sen’s Pratham Kadam Phool. Both films released in 1969 and were cult hits. Incidentally, both films had music composed by Sudhin Dasgupta, and are hugely popular even today.

Chena Achena too was a major box office hit.

Winged Tourists in My City

Parambrata’s film explores the mother-son relationship. Tanuja plays Upama, a woman in her seventies, who lives alone in a rundown house in Kolkata. She has a strained relationship with her son Soumya, played by Jisshu Sengupta. Soumya’s childhood friend Rajdeep (Parambrata), along with a seven-year old boy Bitlu visits Upama, and the septuagenarian strikes a special bond with the child.

Soumitra plays a pivotal role in the film.

That aside Arunima Ghosh and Gargi Roychowdhury play other major roles in Shonar Pahar. Arunima has been cast as Jisshu’s wife in the film.
