Popular Bangladeshi Singer Shammi Akhtar No More
RBN Web Desk: Veteran Bangladeshi playback singer Shammi Akhtar died today evening at a private hospital in Dhaka. She was 62.
Her family confirmed the news of her death.
Shammi Akhtar had been battling breast cancer for long. Her condition had deteriorated over the past few days and she breathed her last on the way to the hospital.
Akhtar began her singing career on radio in 1970. She played back for the time for the 1978 film Osikkhito. She won a national award in 2010 as the best female playback singer for the film Bhalobaslei Ghor Bandha Jaye Na. Music for the film was composed by Ali Akram Shuvo.
In a career spanning nearly five decades, Akhtar lent her voice to more than 300 songs.
She is survived by her husband—folk singer Akramul Islam—and a son.
