Haimanti Shukla to Receive Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

RBN Web Desk: In a major recognition to her decades-long singing career, Haimanti Shukla will be honoured with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) Award for 2017. SNA chairperson Sekhar Sen informed her about the decision in an email last night.

According to Sen, the veteran artiste’s name was finalised on 8 June, at an SNA meeting in Imphal. She will be awarded under the Sugam Sangeet category, for her outstanding contribution to light music, Sen added.

Reacting to the development, Haimanti said, she never chased awards in her career. This is perhaps the biggest recognition in her singing career, she said, adding that she is grateful to her listeners whom she has served all these years.

Delhi-based theatre director Bapi Bose and puppet artiste Sudipta Gupta are the two other Bengalis who will receive the award besides Haimanti.
