Kolkata: Veteran Rabindra Sangeet singer Purabi Mukhopadhyay died yesterday evening at her home. She was 83 and was suffering from old-age related complications.
Her daughters, and many of the singer’s students were by Purabi’s side when she breathed her last.
The nephew of MP Hirendranath Mukhopadhyay, Purabi was one of the leading exponents of Rabindra Sangeet. A protégé of the legendary Debabrata Biswas, Purabi later taught music at Visva Bharati. She had several albums to her credit and was one of the most-heard singers on the Kolkata station of All India Radio.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the demise of Purabi Mukhopadhyay and offered condolences to the singer’s family.
