RBN Web Desk: Popular actor Subhasish Mukhopadhyay will play legendary broadcaster Birendra Krishna Bhadra in a film on the iconic Mahisasuramardini programme which is aired from the Kolkata station of All India Radio (AIR) at daybreak on Mahalaya. Mahisasuramardini, scripted by Bani Kumar and narrated by Birendra Krishna, has been broadcast since 1931. Music for the programme was composed by the Pankaj Mullick.
But in 1976, in an attempt to modernise the programme, AIR decided to pull out the original Mahisasuramardini and replace it with a new version that had Bengal matinee idol Uttam Kumar as the narrator. The show was promptly rejected by the audience. Mahisasuramardini returned on air the next year and has since been broadcast uninterruptedly.
Now, director Soumik Sen is making a film on Mahisasuramardini, and the popular rejection of the Uttam Kumar version.
The film is tentatively titled Mahalaya.
While Jisshu Sengupta has been roped in to play Uttam Kumar, Subhomoy Chatterjee will play Pankaj Mullick. Kanchan Mullick, Rudranil Ghosh, and Saptarshi Roy will play other key characters in the film, which is being presented by actor Prosenjit Chatterjee’s production company nIdeas Creations. Music for the film will be composed by Debojyoti Mishra.
Prosenjit is likely to play an extended guest appearance in Mahalaya. He said that his company has already got the nod from the families of Uttam Kumar, Pankaj Mullick, and Birendra Krishna to make the film.
Mahalaya will go on the floors from 14 March.
