RBN Web Desk: After Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Sachin Tendulkar, another biopic on a former India cricket captain is likely to go on the floors soon. If everything goes according to plans, a Sourav Ganguly biopic could hit the theatres later this year or early 2019.
According to several national media, leading producer Ekta Kapoor is all set to bankroll the film, under the banner ALTBalaji. It is likely to be based on Sourav’s autobiography, A Century Is Not Enough, which released at the Kolkata International Book Fair this year.
Sources revealed, senior ALTBalaji officials have already held several rounds of talks with Sourav in this regard, both in Mumbai and Kolkata. Sourav has reportedly suggested the name of a leading Bengali director to helm his biopic. However, Ekta has insisted on roping in a Mumbai-based director for the project, sources added.
Sports films have enjoyed box office success in recent times with Dangal and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story being major hits. Even Azhar enjoyed a decent run at the box office. Sachin: A Billion Dreams was not a biopic per se but a docudrama. The film was fairly successful.
The actor to play Sourav’s role is yet to be finalised. It may be recalled that Jisshu Sengupta had recently expressed his interest to play the role if a biopic on Sourav is made.
In a 16-year long international career, Sourav played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs . He has been one of the most successful captains of the game in India.
