RBN Web Desk: Prominent Bengali actress and television show host Rachana Banerjee has lent support to Ferdous Ahmed in the election campaign row which saw the Bangladeshi actor seeking votes for a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate. Ferdous, on 14 April, participated in an election rally organised by Kanaia Lal Agarwal who is contesting the Raiganj seat on a TMC ticket.
Several political parties objected to a foreign citizen appearing in an Indian electoral rally and complained to the Election Commission (EC) in this regard. The ministry of home affairs, subsequently, asked the actor to return to Bangladesh and scrapped his business visa.
Speaking to the media recently, Rachana said, Ferdous had participated in the rally at his own will. He is a Bengali and both West Bengal and Bangladesh speak in the same language which is more important than his citizenship. Rachana questioned whether there is any written law which says that artistes can’t work or campaign in a foreign country.
Raiganj goes to polls today.
