Mrinal Sen Finally Has an Award in His Name

RBN Web Desk: Filmmaker Mrinal Sen will finally have an award in his name. Sen, who died on 30 December 2018, is widely credited to have put Indian cinema on the global map along with peers Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak.

Cine Central, Calcutta, has instituted the ‘Mrinal Sen Memorial Award’ in remembrance of the late filmmaker. The award will be handed over to the most promising filmmaker from Bengal. Abhishek Saha who directed ‘Uronchondi’ (2018) will be the first recipient of the award. Saha will be given the award at Cine Central’s upcoming International Forum of New Cinema festival to be held in Kolkata from 26 April to 2 May.

Besides Saha, veteran actress Mamata Shankar will be honoured with the ‘Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Films from Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Ecuador, Switzerland, Italy, Costa Rica, Belarus, Serbia, France, Germany, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Mongolia will be shown in this year’s festival. Among these, Costa Rican and Ecuadorean films will be shown in Kolkata for the first time ever. Bangladeshi director Noor Imran Mithu’s 2018 film ‘Komola Rocket’ will open this year’s Cine Central festival.
