RBN Web Desk: Bollywood actress Dimple Kapadia made her Hindi film debut in Bobby (1973). Since then, she went on to act in several blockbusters and critically acclaimed films but Bobby still remains the biggest hit in her career.
The film had its share of not-so-pleasant moments largely centring the whirlwind romance between Dimple and Rajesh Khanna. The then reigning Bollywood superstar met Dimple on the sets of Bobby and after a few days proposed marriage to her. The actress later said in an interview, she was a big fan of Rajesh Khanna, and was so overwhelmed by his proposal that she couldn’t say no to him.
Rajesh Khanna, popularly known as Kaka in the industry, would often visit Dimple on the sets of Bobby and the two would go on a rendezvous in the actor’s car. This caused delays in the shooting and the budget of the film overshot by quite a margin. Director Raj Kapoor was left miffed but didn’t say anything to Dimple as he needed her to complete the remaining part of the film.
Dimple and Rajesh were married at her father Chunnibhai Kapadia’s Juhu bungalow in March 1973 and the actress returned to finish Bobby.
But in most of the scenes of the film that were canned after her marriage, Dimple is seen hiding her hands from the camera. She had bridal mehndi on them which couldn’t be possibly shown on because of continuity issues. Many scenes were rewritten so as to not reveal her hands. While this angered Raj Kapoor, he never voiced his displeasure.
Bobby won Dimple a best actress Filmfare Award.
After Bobby, Dimple Kapadia took an 11-year break from films and returned with Zakhmi Sher in 1984. Saagar, the other major hit in Dimple’s career with her Bobby co-star Rishi Kapoor, released the following year.
At an event in 2013 to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Bobby, Dimple said, four decades back she lost her heart to this man (Rishi) and has since not been able to get it back.
