RBN Web Desk: The Assam government is all set to purchase legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika’s house in south Kolkata. The formalities in this regard are already complete and the handover is likely to happen within a month.
The property is currently owned by Sushil Dangi who acquired it about a decade back. The Assam government had earlier served a notice to Dangi who had agreed to sell the house.
According to reports, an Assam government team, comprising the chief minister’s media advisor Hrishikesh Goswami, cultural affairs minister Naba Kumar Doley, and others, have signed an agreement with Dangi for the transfer of ownership. Dangi will be paid ₹1.65 crore.
Hazarika was a tenant in the house situated on Golf Club Road in Tollygunge when he moved to the city and later bought the property in the 1980s. He achieved international fame through his compositions while staying in this house. His songs were translated into several Indian languages. The house later became dilapidated and Hazarika’s family could not afford the maintenance costs.
The Assam government plans to convert the house to a museum.
