RBN Web Desk: Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvo is likely to play Apu in the fourth film of the Apu series to be directed by Subhrajit Mitra. Apu, the main protagonist in auteur Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy, is all set to return to the big screen six decades after the last film hit the theatres. Apur Sansar, the last film in the trilogy, released in 1959 which also marked the debut of Soumitra Chatterjee in the title role.
Mitra is about to make Avijatrik—The Wanerlust of Apu, based entirely on the concluding part of Aparajito written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. The plot of the new film will take off from where Apur Sansar ended.
The rest of the cast for Avijatrik is yet to be finalised. The film will be presented by director Madhur Bhandarkar.
The Chandni Bar director recently clarified on social media that they are not remaking any of the films that comprised the trilogy. “We are not touching the films made by Satyajit Ray,” he said, adding that he is “a big fan of the legendary filmmaker who helped Indian cinema reach global audiences.”
The Apu Trilogy, comprising Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar, are widely acknowledged to have heralded the new-realist cinema movement in India. All three films won huge international critical acclaim.
