It is said Love becomes ‘Mondobasha’ if it exceeds the level of possession. There is no term called 'Mandiobasa' in Bengali dictionary, however, 'mando' bears the opposite meaning of 'bhalo' which translates to 'good', 'bhalobasa' stands for love and 'Mandobasa' stands for a twisted feeling that comes with excessive love which is not a thing to cherish.
“Mandobasar Galpo” is a romantic musical – thriller where the main protagonist Ahana Sen played by Paoli Dam is a cerebral film maker of national reputes but is a loner in reality after losing her fiancé Ritwick Basu (played by Kaushik Sen) few days before their wedding. Dr. Sayantan Chowdhury, aka Baban, a renowned psychiatrist played by Parambrata Chatterjee treated her, helped her come out of the melancholia and had been instrumental in making Ahana a successful film maker. She was snug in her world until she met Rick played by Indrasish Roy. The story is about the various facets of human emotion and how the characters deal with them.
The difference between healthy and obsessive love is that with the latter, those feelings of infatuation become extreme, expanding to the point of becoming obsessions. Obsessive love and jealousy that is delusional is a symptom of mental-health problems and is a symptom that occurs in about 0.1% of adults. Individuals who suffer from delusional jealousy often interpret minor experiences like a coworker saying hello to their spouse or romantic partner looking at a passerby as positive proof that their loved one is being unfaithful. Such was the role of Paoli Dam who later in the film fell for Rik whom Sayantan hired and taught the mannerism of Ritwik so as Ahana falls for him and after being rejected gets another shock.
In the second half of the movie it was learnt Sayantan was in love with Ahana and even after trying his level best didn’t get her and had a paralysis attack at the end. Towards the climax it was also seen that Sayantan aka Baban was responsible for the death of Ritwik, just to woo Ahana. Initial though successful but later half failing every attempt to impress Ahana, and especially when he learnt that Ahana fell for Rik, Baban had a paralysis attack proving that even a physiatrist’s love can go up to the level of obsession.
The story has been written by Sanjib Banerjee. Directed by Tathagata Banerjee, Mondobashar Golpo is a Bengali drama film with a twist in the end. Apparently, no love story is brewing up between the leads in this movie but deals with ‘Obsessive Love disorder’. The plot and the acting were commendable especially Paoli Dam who was a real eye-catcher. The title track sung by Rupankar Bagchi adds into the true flavor towards the climax.
